Eco School Cleaning in Sydney That Protects Students and Staff
Schools and campuses are among the most sensitive environments to clean, and the people who spend the most hours in them are still developing lungs. GreenClean Commercial delivers eco school cleaning across Sydney using electrolysed water, aqueous ozone and dry steam instead of the sprays and quats linked to occupational asthma. The result is genuinely cleaner classrooms, halls and amenities without hazardous residue on the surfaces children touch every day.

Why low-tox matters most in a school
Children breathe faster than adults and spend six or more hours a day inside classrooms, so the chemistry used to clean those rooms lands on them at closer range than almost any other occupant type. Conventional cleaning relies heavily on quaternary ammonium compounds (quats) and fragranced sprays, which linger as airborne particles and surface residue long after the cleaner has moved on.
The evidence on cleaning chemistry is now hard to ignore. The ECRHS study (Svanes et al. 2018) found lung-function decline in regular cleaners comparable to roughly 20 pack-years of smoking. The AIHW attributes between 9 and 15 per cent of adult-onset asthma to occupational exposure, and lists cleaning as a named high-risk occupation. For a school, that risk is carried by your cleaning staff, your teachers who work alongside them, and the students in every room. Reducing that exposure is not a nice-to-have; it is a duty-of-care decision.
How our methods work
We replace the bulk of conventional chemistry with three proven low-tox methods.
- Electrolysed water (HOCl) is made on site from water and a trace of salt. It is a GECA-certified, TGA-listed disinfectant that reverts to salt water after use, so there is no hazardous residue left on desks, door handles or shared equipment.
- Stabilised aqueous ozone cleans and deodorises, then reverts to oxygen and water. It handles high-traffic amenities and sports halls without fragrance loading the air.
- Dry steam delivers low-moisture thermal decontamination for grout, toilets and hard-to-reach surfaces, using heat rather than chemistry.
- Colour-coded microfibre with disciplined dwell times prevents cross-contamination between classrooms, kitchens and bathrooms.
Where a task is disinfection-critical, such as a sick-bay or a gastro outbreak, we retain TGA-listed disinfectants and use them deliberately. We say no added synthetic chemicals and no hazardous residue on standard cleaning, and we are precise about it. We never claim chemical-free.
The compliance angle education leaders should know
From 1 December 2026, enforceable Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) replace the current WES across around 700 reviewed chemicals. Elimination sits at the very top of the WHS hierarchy of controls, above ventilation, PPE and administrative measures. Removing hazardous cleaning chemistry from your site is the strongest control available, and it future-proofs your cleaning contract against the tighter limits coming into force.
For universities and independent schools chasing building ratings, the methods align cleanly. GECA-certified products are deemed-to-satisfy for the Green Star Green Cleaning credit. The WELL Cleaning Products and Protocol feature targets hazardous-chemical reduction, and NABERS Indoor Environment tests for VOCs and formaldehyde — both areas where fragranced sprays typically cost you points. Our commercial cleaning services are built around these credits from the outset.
What a Sydney school cleaning program looks like
Every campus is different, so we scope rather than assume. A typical program covers daily classroom cleaning, amenities and high-touch points, with periodic deep cleans of halls, gyms, canteens and staff rooms scheduled around the school calendar and term breaks. Sydney's coastal humidity adds mould pressure in older buildings and poorly ventilated wings, so we build dry-steam and moisture-management steps into the program where that risk is real.
We work across primary and secondary schools, TAFE and university campus cleaning sites, from single classroom blocks to multi-building campuses. Cleaning is scheduled outside teaching hours wherever possible, and our colour-coded system keeps food-prep, learning and bathroom zones strictly separated. If your site spans other facilities, we can align the program with our broader Sydney cleaning services.
Pricing framing
On standard scopes, our eco school cleaning is priced at parity with conventional cleaning — you are not paying a premium to remove the hazardous chemistry. A modest uplift of 10 to 15 per cent applies only on health-critical or rating-critical sites, such as those pursuing a formal Green Star, WELL or NABERS outcome. The walkthrough and quote are free, with no obligation.

Frequently asked questions
Is electrolysed water actually effective enough to disinfect a classroom?
Yes. The electrolysed water we use produces hypochlorous acid (HOCl), a GECA-certified, TGA-listed disinfectant. It is generated on site and reverts to salt water after use, leaving no hazardous residue. For disinfection-critical tasks such as sick-bays or outbreaks, we retain TGA-listed disinfectants and apply them deliberately.
Can eco cleaning handle a gastro or flu outbreak at school?
It can. Our standard methods clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces effectively, and when a task is disinfection-critical we escalate to TGA-listed disinfectants used to their required dwell times. We plan outbreak protocols with you in advance so response is fast and the right products are always on hand.
Why does low-tox cleaning matter more in schools than other buildings?
Children breathe faster than adults and spend long hours in classrooms, so chemical residue and airborne particles affect them at close range. Cleaning is also a named high-risk occupation for asthma, which puts your cleaning staff and teachers at risk too. Removing hazardous chemistry reduces exposure for everyone on site.
Will switching to eco cleaning cost our school more?
On standard scopes, our pricing is at parity with conventional cleaning, so removing hazardous chemistry does not cost extra. A 10 to 15 per cent uplift applies only on health-critical or rating-critical sites, such as those pursuing Green Star, WELL or NABERS outcomes. The walkthrough and quote are free.
How does this help with the 2026 chemical exposure limit changes?
From 1 December 2026, enforceable Workplace Exposure Limits replace the current standards across around 700 chemicals. Elimination sits at the top of the WHS hierarchy of controls, so removing hazardous cleaning chemistry is the strongest available response and future-proofs your contract against tighter limits.
