Non-Toxic Childcare & Early Learning Cleaning in Sydney
In a Sydney early learning centre, the cleaning method matters as much as the result. Infants crawl the floor, put toys in their mouths and breathe air close to freshly cleaned surfaces — which means residue and fumes are not abstract risks. We clean Sydney childcare and daycare centres with dry steam and activated water, keeping TGA-listed disinfectants for the tasks that genuinely require them.

The exposure problem in a childcare setting
Children are not small adults. They spend their day at floor level, mouth surfaces and toys, and breathe faster relative to their body size than the staff around them. That combination makes conventional cleaning chemistry — with its residues and volatile organic compounds — a poor fit for the room where it is used most.
The risk is not only to the children. Cleaning is a named high-risk occupation for occupational asthma, and the evidence is confronting: Svanes et al. (2018) found lung-function decline in regular cleaners comparable to around 20 pack-years of smoking, while the AIHW attributes 9–15% of adult-onset asthma to occupational exposure. In a centre where educators and cleaners share enclosed rooms with the children, reducing hazardous chemistry protects everyone in the building.
This is why we lead with elimination — removing the hazard at source rather than managing it with gloves, masks and ventilation. Elimination sits at the top of the WHS hierarchy of controls, and it is the most defensible position a centre director can take.
How the methods work
Our core approach for childcare cleaning uses two complementary methods with no added synthetic chemicals and no hazardous residue.
Dry steam applies low-moisture thermal decontamination at high temperature. It lifts soil and sanitises hard surfaces, cot rails, high-touch points and toys without leaving a wet film, and it dries quickly — useful where rooms cycle back into use through the day. Because it is water-based heat rather than chemistry, there is nothing left behind for a child to mouth or absorb.
Activated water covers electrolysed water (HOCl generated from water and a trace of salt, which reverts to salt water) and stabilised aqueous ozone (which reverts to oxygen and water). Both clean and sanitise effectively, then break back down to benign components rather than persisting as residue. Our electrolysed-water products are GECA-certified and TGA-listed.
All of this runs on colour-coded microfibre with disciplined dwell times, so nappy-change areas, kitchens, bathrooms and play spaces never share equipment.
Where TGA-listed disinfectants still belong
We are precise about this. For disinfection-critical tasks — nappy-change surfaces, an illness outbreak, blood or bodily-fluid events — we retain TGA-listed disinfectants and apply them correctly. Low-tox does not mean under-disinfected. It means matching the method to the task so that harsh chemistry is used only where the hygiene case demands it, not sprayed across every surface by default. You can read more about our activated-water sanitising approach and how we decide what each surface needs.
Meeting ACECQA hygiene expectations
A childcare cleaning program has to satisfy hygiene and health obligations, not just look clean. Our protocols are built around documented dwell times, colour-coded zoning and a clear record of what was cleaned, how and when — the kind of evidence that supports your own quality and safety framework at assessment. We work with your existing daily-routine expectations rather than replacing them, and we document our part of the process so it stands up to scrutiny.
What a Sydney program looks like
Most centres run a daily after-hours clean covering floors, bathrooms, nappy-change areas, kitchens, high-touch points and communal spaces, with periodic deeper work on toys, soft furnishings, carpets and vents. Sydney's humidity — particularly through the warmer, wetter months — raises mould and bacterial pressure in bathrooms and poorly ventilated store rooms, so we build moisture management and periodic deep decontamination into the schedule rather than treating it as an add-on.
Scope and frequency are set at the walkthrough, because a two-room service differs from a large multi-room centre. We tailor the program to your rooms, your enrolment patterns and your operating hours. If you run multiple sites across Sydney, we can standardise the protocol across all of them so every centre is held to the same standard.
Pricing
On standard cleaning scopes we price at parity with conventional cleaning — switching to a low-tox method should not cost you a premium for everyday work. Where a site is health-critical or pursuing a specific rating, a modest uplift of 10–15% may apply to cover the additional method, documentation and assurance involved. The walkthrough and quote are free and carry no obligation.

Frequently asked questions
Is non-toxic cleaning actually effective enough for a childcare centre?
Yes. Dry steam and activated water clean and sanitise effectively for the bulk of childcare surfaces, and where a task genuinely requires disinfection — such as nappy-change areas or an illness outbreak — we retain TGA-listed disinfectants and use them correctly. The point is to match the method to the hygiene need, not to under-clean.
Are the products safe if a child touches or mouths a cleaned surface?
Our activated-water methods use no added synthetic chemicals and leave no hazardous residue — electrolysed water reverts to salt water and aqueous ozone reverts to oxygen and water. Dry steam leaves nothing behind but a quick-drying surface. We still observe correct dwell and drying times before rooms return to use.
Can you clean during the day or only after hours?
Most centres prefer an after-hours daily clean so rooms are ready for the next morning, and dry steam's quick drying suits that timing. Where daytime attention is needed, our low-moisture, low-residue methods make it safer to clean occupied areas than conventional chemical spraying. We set the timing at the walkthrough around your operating hours.
Why is 'chemical-free' not a claim you make?
Because it would be inaccurate and the ACCC treats such claims seriously. Water and salt are chemicals, and we retain TGA-listed disinfectants for disinfection-critical tasks. We describe our work honestly as using no added synthetic chemicals and leaving no hazardous residue, which is what actually matters for a childcare environment.
Does switching to low-tox cleaning cost more than our current service?
On standard scopes we price at parity with conventional cleaning. A modest 10–15% uplift may apply only where a site is health-critical or working toward a specific rating and needs additional method and documentation. The walkthrough and quote are free, so you can compare before committing.
