A retail floor or showroom lives or dies on first impressions. Streaky glass, hazy display cases and a lingering chemical smell all undercut the sale before a customer says a word. The problem with conventional cleaning is that the shine often comes at the cost of an invisible film — surfactant and solvent residue that dulls surfaces over time, attracts dust and can transfer onto stock.

Electrolysed water (hypochlorous acid generated on site from water and a trace of salt) cleans and sanitises, then reverts to plain salt water as it dries — leaving no film to build up on glass, mirrors, laminate or high-touch display surfaces. Why low-tox matters more in retail than most people think

Retail spaces are occupied by staff for full shifts and by the public for hours at a time, often with poor natural ventilation in enclosed centres and showrooms. That combination concentrates whatever your cleaning products off-gas.

The evidence on cleaner health is hard to ignore. The ECRHS study (Svanes et al. 2018) linked regular exposure to cleaning chemicals with lung-function decline comparable to around 20 pack-years of smoking. The AIHW attributes 9 to 15 per cent of adult-onset asthma to occupational exposure, with cleaning named as a high-risk occupation. For a retailer, that is not an abstract statistic — it is your floor staff and your cleaning crew breathing the same air your customers do.

Switching to no added synthetic chemicals removes the source rather than managing it. That is elimination — the top of the WHS hierarchy of controls — not a filter or a fan trying to dilute a problem that shouldn't be there.

How the methods work on a retail floor

We match method to surface and task:

• Electrolysed water (HOCl): GECA-certified and TGA-listed, for glass, display cases, counters, mirrors and general hard surfaces. Cleans and sanitises, dries residue-free.
• Stabilised aqueous ozone: for floors and larger surface areas, reverting to oxygen and water after use.
• Dry steam: low-moisture thermal decontamination for fitting rooms, grout, and detail work where moisture control matters — useful in Darwin's humidity, where excess water invites mould.
• Colour-coded microfibre with disciplined dwell times: so cross-contamination between areas like customer zones, food-adjacent displays and back-of-house is controlled by system, not by luck.

Where a task is genuinely disinfection-critical, we retain TGA-listed disinfectants and use them deliberately. We describe our work as leaving no hazardous residue and using no added synthetic chemicals — never chemical-free, because that claim isn't accurate or honest.

There is also a deadline worth noting. From 1 December 2026, enforceable Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) replace the current WES across around 700 reviewed chemicals. Eliminating hazardous products now is the cleanest way to stay ahead of that change rather than scrambling later.
