Why low-tox matters on a shop floor

Retail cleaning happens around people. Staff work full shifts in the same enclosed space, and in smaller Hobart shopfronts and showrooms there is often limited ventilation and a lot of hard, reflective surface area. That combination concentrates whatever gets sprayed.

The compliance shift you should plan for

From 1 December 2026, enforceable Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) replace the current WES across around 700 reviewed chemicals. Elimination sits at the top of the WHS hierarchy of controls, which means removing a hazardous substance from your site is preferable to managing it with ventilation or PPE. Switching to methods that carry no hazardous residue is a genuine elimination step, not a paperwork exercise.

For retailers inside larger developments or shopping centres, ratings can also come into play. GECA-certified products are deemed-to-satisfy for the Green Star Green Cleaning credit, the WELL Cleaning Products and Protocol feature targets hazardous-chemical reduction, and NABERS Indoor Environment tests VOCs and formaldehyde.
