Why low-tox matters more in a childcare setting

A daycare floor is a play surface. Children crawl on it, sit on it, drop food on it and pick that food back up. Toys go from hand to mouth and back into the shared bin dozens of times a day. In that context, the residue a cleaning product leaves behind matters as much as the germs it removes, because whatever coats a mat or a table edge ends up on small hands and, before long, in small mouths.

Conventional cleaning relies heavily on residual quaternary disinfectants and fragranced products that linger on surfaces and in the air. The occupational evidence is difficult to ignore: the Svanes et al. 2018 ECRHS study linked long-term cleaning exposure to lung-function decline comparable to around 20 pack-years of smoking, and the AIHW attributes 9 to 15 per cent of adult-onset asthma to occupational exposure, with cleaning named as a high-risk occupation. In a room full of developing lungs, and staffed by educators who work there every day, reducing that chemical load is a genuine health decision, not a marketing one.

How our methods work

We lead with two low-tox methods and keep registered disinfectants for the tasks that truly require them.

Dry steam uses low-moisture, high-temperature vapour to lift and decontaminate soft and hard surfaces — mats, cots, high chairs, upholstered corners and grout — without saturating them or leaving a chemical film. Because it is low-moisture, surfaces are back in use quickly, which matters in rooms that never really stop.

Activated-water sanitising covers electrolysed water (HOCl, generated on site from water and a trace of salt, reverting to salt water) and stabilised aqueous ozone (which reverts to oxygen and water). Both clean and sanitise effectively for everyday touchpoints, then break back down to harmless components rather than persisting as residue. Our electrolysed water is GECA-certified and TGA-listed.

Where a task is genuinely disinfection-critical — a nappy change area, a sick-bay surface, an outbreak response — we use TGA-listed disinfectants applied with disciplined dwell times and colour-coded microfibre to prevent cross-contamination between zones. This is an honest position: we reduce hazardous chemistry to what is necessary, and we say "no added synthetic chemicals" and "no hazardous residue" rather than claiming anything is chemical-free.

The compliance and ratings angle

From 1 December 2026, enforceable Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) replace the current WES across roughly 700 reviewed chemicals. Under the WHS hierarchy of controls, elimination sits at the top — removing a hazardous substance beats managing exposure to it. Choosing low-tox methods for routine cleaning is a straightforward way to reduce the number of scheduled chemicals your service has to store, handle and account for, and to keep educators clear of substances they would otherwise breathe daily.

For operators reporting against building or wellbeing frameworks, GECA-certified products are deemed-to-satisfy for the Green Star Green Cleaning credit, WELL's Cleaning Products and Protocol feature targets hazardous-chemical reduction, and NABERS Indoor Environment measures VOCs and formaldehyde. Even where a single centre is not formally rated, these standards are a useful benchmark for what "good" looks like in an environment full of young children.
