Why low-tox cleaning matters most in a school

A school is not a typical workplace. Children breathe faster than adults relative to their body size, spend long hours in enclosed rooms, and are more sensitive to airborne irritants. The people cleaning those rooms are exposed even more directly. A large European study (Svanes et al., 2018) found lung-function decline in cleaners comparable to around 20 pack-years of smoking, and the AIHW attributes 9–15% of adult-onset asthma to occupational exposure, with cleaning named as a high-risk occupation.

Much of that risk comes from the everyday tools of conventional cleaning: quaternary ammonium compounds (quats), fragranced sprays and volatile solvents that linger in the air well after the cleaner has left. In a classroom cleaned overnight, residue and off-gassing can still be present when the first students arrive. This is not a chemical-free approach and we do not claim it to be. From 1 December 2026, enforceable Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) replace the current WES across roughly 700 reviewed chemicals.
